CHAPTER ONE

KATRINA TAPSON SAT at the desk in her living room, answering emails from her family and catching up with personal business. When the phone rang, she looked at the caller ID and made a face. It was her ex-fiancé, an editor at the publishing house where she worked.

“Hello.”

“Hi, it’s me.”

“Yeah, I know. I have caller ID like most people. Why am I talking to you on a Friday night? Why am I talking to you at all?”

“I wanted you to know you’re getting promoted to senior artist.”

Katrina made an exasperated sound. “That doesn’t explain why you’re calling me outside of the office. Monday would have been fine.”

“I was thinking about us. We can’t talk at work.”

“There isn’t any ‘us.’ I’ve moved on, so should you.”

She knew Gordon might still have feelings for her, but she’d ended their engagement when she found out he didn’t want a family. Actually, it was more because he’d pretended all along that he wanted one, only to finally admit he had just hoped she’d change her mind once they were married. The long deceit still bothered Katrina.

Shouldn’t she have seen it?

A sound from the back of the apartment caught her attention and she looked up to see her nephew.

She winked and pointed at the phone, making a face. He grinned.

“Sorry, I need to get off. ’Bye.” Katrina disconnected before Gordon could protest and put the receiver down. “Can’t you sleep, Tim?”

Her nephew plopped onto the couch. “It’s kinda noisy out tonight.”

She knew what he meant. The city traffic seemed louder than usual on the street outside the apartment building. “I’m sorry.”

He shrugged. “It isn’t your fault.”

Timothy was a good kid. Her sister and brother-in-law had taken teaching positions in Hong Kong, but Tim had been quietly miserable there. After several family consultations, they’d decided he could stay with Katrina. Except that wasn’t the answer, either—he missed his friends and life in Montana. Her nephew had thought Seattle was awesome when he was visiting and going to professional sports games and the Seattle Center, but actually living here was different. Not that he’d admit it outright.

“It’s late,” she said. “You should try to sleep. We have a reservation at the riding stable in the morning.”

He shrugged. “Okay. I just wish they didn’t put blinders on the horses. They think we don’t know what we’re doing.”

Despite the disgust in his voice, he headed for his bedroom. He didn’t pass up an opportunity to ride, no matter what.

Katrina got it—she missed Montana, too. While she hadn’t grown up spending weekends and summers on a family ranch like her nephew, horses and small-town life had been part of her childhood. She’d always felt out of place in the city. And now all the buildings and cars were making her feel stifled, which wasn’t good for an artist.

She waited until she was sure Timothy’s door had closed before going online to check the real estate and rental listings in her hometown. It had become her Friday-night ritual over the
